Local HIV/AIDS info
Cameroon has a generalised HIV/AIDS epidemic with women and
young people disproportionately affected.
Cameroon has a large adolescent population and there is a high
incidence of early marriage and pregnancy (in and out of marriage)
among girls under the age of 19. This leads to a variety of risk
factors including exposure to unwanted pregnancy, unsafe abortion
and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that threaten their
sexual and reproductive health. But there are cultural, political
and religious barriers that hinder the open acknowledgement of
these practices and need to be addressed.
There are also a number of high-risk groups including truck
drivers, residents along the pipe line from Chad-Cameroon,
commercial sex workers and the army. However funding is not focused
on these high-risk groups.
