Local HIV/AIDS info
Located in Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan is home to 5.2 million
people. Estimated adult HIV prevalence rate (aged 15-49), 2009 is
0.3 %. There is an estimated 9,800 people (all ages) living with
HIV (2009). There is no sexual education in the schools. Drug
injection is the main route of transmission (the pass way from
Afghanistan), but an increase of sexual transmission is being
recorded among young people. There were several cases of medical
infection (children were infected in the hospital). Most of the HIV
positive people now are Intravenous drug users, mostly in the South
of the country.
