Local HIV/AIDS info
Since 2008, the National Centre for AIDS Prevention and Control
(CENSIDA), use the same methodology as (UNAIDS). Based on
estimations performed by CENSIDA, at the end of 2010 there were
225,000 adults living with HIV in Mexico.
29% of the 225,000 people living with HIV in Mexico receive
anti-retroviral therapy in one of the health institutions or
private clinics. 14% have been detected as HIV positive, but have
not yet require anti-retroviral therapy.
The first AIDS case was diagnosed in Mexico in 1983. Although
according to retrospective analysis and other investigative
techniques in public health, the start and increase of the HIV
epidemic can be located to 1981. Since the beginning of the
epidemic in Mexico until September 30, 2010, the National Registry
of AIDS cases have been recorded at 143,281 people of which 82.2%
are male and 17.8% are women.
