Local HIV/AIDS info

Nepal has an emerging HIV epidemic amongst certain 'high risk' populations including male/female sex workers and their clients, men who have sex with men and labour migrants (clients of sex workers).  

Prevalence in Nepal has potential to rise due to low levels of comprehensive knowledge about HIV.  Most of those infected are unaware of their status.  A lack of adequate skills based HIV education and youth focused HIV programmes along with other socio-cultural barriers such as stigma and discrimination, political instability and poor access to facilities amongst the rural populations, further compound the issues affecting youth in relation to the Nepal HIV/AIDS pandemic.
