Local HIV/AIDS info

In comparison to the millions of people who have died of AIDS worldwide, the Netherlands has a 'modest' number of people infected with HIV, thanks to education and availability of medicines. The number of new HIV infections is, however, increasing.  

• Estimated number of people with HIV: 21,500
• Average new HIV infection per year: 1,200
• number of AIDS deaths 2006-2010: 409
• 40% of the people with HIV in the Netherlands is heterosexual.
