Local HIV/AIDS info
Some vital statistics about HIV/AIDS and SRHR in Pakistan:
- 180,200,000 is the estimated population of in July 2010 and its
annual growth rate is 2.2 %
- 54,200,000 is the total population of Youth 10-24 in 2006.
30% of the population falls under the age bracket of 10- 19
- 1 out of 6 women age 15-19 is already married.
- 19.1 is the median age of first marriage (boys and girls) in
Pakistan.
- 20% of children experience an act of sexual violence before the
age of 18.
- 11 % of males and 4% of females have a part in the decision
making process regarding their suppose
- 95% of women are aware of modern methods of contraception, use
is limited to 28% of women aged 15-49
- UN and government estimates put the number of HIV/AIDS cases
around 97,000 ranging from lowest estimate 46,000 to highest
estimate-210,000
- The overall prevalence of HIV infection in adults aged 15 to 49
is 0.1%
- Pakistan has a concentrated epidemic among injection drug users
in most cities and among male sex workers.
- The main target groups include IDUs, male, female and
transgender sex workers
Other groups that also have HIV among them are truck drivers,
expatriated migrant workers and wives/ children of IDUs
