Local HIV/AIDS info
In the Russian Federation, the HIV epidemic affects primarily
young people, the most active part of the population: approximately
68% of all people with HIV diagnosed for are young people under 30.
The number of new HIV cases has increased due to increasing cases
of sexual transmission of HIV from vulnerable groups - primarily
injecting drug users - to the general population. The proportion of
new HIV cases among women is increasing as well. Women in Russia
are mainly infected with HIV through heterosexual contacts (62.4%
of new cases among women in 2010), whereas men, through injecting
drug use (74.5%).
In general, the epidemiological situation around HIV infection
in Russia can be considered, according to the FSMC for AIDS,
"steadily deteriorating": on average 160 new HIV infections were
recorded in Russia per day in 2009-2010 (compared to 150 in
2008).
