The AIDS epidemic on Tanzania mainland is described as generalised, meaning it affects all sectors of the population. Heterosexual sex accounts for the majority of infections (80 percent) on Tanzania mainland (UNGASS/TACAIDS 2010 reported by avert.org)

HIV prevalence is particularly high in the area reached by the dance4life programme (16.5% compared to the national rate of 5.6%).
