in Iringa - dance4life's intervention region (TACAIDS, November
2008)
Estimated number of AIDS deaths in 2009: 86,000 (UNAIDS,
2009)
Percentage of young men and women who both correctly identify
ways of preventing the sexual transmission of HIV and who reject
major misconceptions about HIV transmission (UNICEF 2005-2009):
Male: 42%, female: 39%
Trends:
The AIDS epidemic on Tanzania mainland is described as
generalised, meaning it affects all sectors of the population.
Heterosexual sex accounts for the majority of infections (80
percent) on Tanzania mainland (UNGASS/TACAIDS 2010 reported by
avert.org)
HIV prevalence is particularly high in the area reached by the
dance4life programme (16.5% compared to the national rate of
5.6%).
