Zimbabwe
In 2009, dance4life Zimbabwe have just come to the end of another exciting quarter and there are a few interesting things that have happened -
• dance4life ambassador reaching out to the community. • Technical support visit to dance4life Zimbabwe by Kirstin and Ronald, from Fortis Bank in the Netherlands
The ambassador in the community!!!!!
As part of campaign4life, dance4life ambassador Leonard Mapfumo visited 4 schools in rural Chimanimani as part of efforts to raise funds for orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) in this remote district of Zimbabwe, as well as greater national outreach. Chimanimani is not one of the SPW districts running dance4life, but is the next district dance4life is going to expand to. An average of 1000 children aged between 13 to 19 years attended these shows organised by SPW peer educators in the districts during the month of July. The fundraising came from students and communities paying a small fee to watch his shows. The campaign raised about US$500 which was channelled to schools as fees for the identified OVCs.
After the shows, Leonard Mapfumo had this to say, ‘I am a young person and it pains me a lot to see other young people not afforded a chance to go to school hence increased vulnerability to HIV…….dance4life has afforded an opportunity to make a difference and also inspire other young people to make a difference in their communities.’
The Technical Support Placement
The last two weeks of September saw an exciting visit by Kirstin and Ronald on a technical support visit to dance4life Zimbabwe. The last two weeks of September saw an exciting visit by Kirstin and Ronald on a technical support visit to dance4life Zimbabwe. The placement was around enhancing dance4life Zimbabwe’s capacity in marketing and public relations issues. A series of meetings were organised with ambassadors, schools and other partners. It started with visiting Prince Edward School to meet some of the agents of change and hear their feelings and expectations about the dance4life project.
In 2008, despite many difficulties and set-backs relating to the political instability within Zimbabwe, we were still able to roll-out the program with the support of various stakeholders in the country. The program has reached 30 schools in two regions and will reach more than 5000 young people.
The event on 29th November 2008 will be hosted in Harare and will receive National TV coverage. dance4life has already received great coverage both on TV and radio of all their events.
